Knee Osteoarthritis (Gonarthrosis)
Of all types of osteoarthritis, gonarthrosis—osteoarthritis of the knee—is the most common. This is a disease in which the hyaline (articular) cartilage breaks down and can no longer perform its function. As the condition progresses, other joint components are also destroyed, leading to joint deformity.
Joint replacement surgery may be performed to treat the knee joint and restore mobility. However, at certain stages of osteoarthritis, a less invasive alternative is available: arthro-medullary shunting.
Knee osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis) is most common in women over 40. The risk is also high for individuals with excess body weight, high sports loads, old knee injuries, neurological issues, or genetic connective tissue weakness.
